Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: From 21% Oxygen to 100%

Although you may have heard about Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy being used for scuba and deep-sea divers dealing with pressure changes, did you know it's also quite successful for a range of other health problems?

Treatments for disorders, including diabetic foot ulcers and carbon monoxide poisoning, using hyperbaric oxygen therapy are excellent. Burns, embolism, sudden hearing loss, decompression sickness, gangrene, and trauma can also be helped with it. How is it working? Well, it involves sitting in a special pressurized chamber where you breathe in oxygen at levels two to three times higher than normal air pressure. This increases the oxygen your lungs absorb, which promotes healing of bodily tissues and fights against infections.

At our hospital, Dr.Soliman Fakeeh Hospital Jeddah, we’ve been running two hyperbaric chambers for over 10 years. Seeing so many people—sports enthusiasts, the elderly, even young children—benefit from this therapy has been quite satisfying. Meeting chronic wound patients and learning about their stories of healing and improvement resulting from hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of my favourite aspects of my job.

But here’s the thing: this incredible treatment needs more awareness. It’s not just about getting the word out to patients, but also educating medical professionals about the benefits and potential of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. We need everyone to know just how powerful and effective this therapy can be.
